India has the 5th largest generation capacity in the world with an installed capacity of 157 GW as on February 28th 2010. The Indian government has set ambitious goals in the 11th plan for the power sector which would result in significant expansion in this industry. In order to provide availability of over 1000 units of per capita electricity by year 2012, it has been estimated that need-based capacity addition of more than 100,000 MW would be required.
Hydro power contributes to around 23.4% of the total 157GW installed capacity with an installed base of 36863 MW. The proposed capacity addition during the 11th plan for the Hydro power sector is 15627 MW.
ECI in its endeavor to become a leading player in the power generation segment with keen interests in Gas/Coal/Hydro power, plans to generate over 3000 MW by 2015.
